Come all you true born Irishmen, wherever you may be
I hope you’ll pay attention, and listen unto me
‘Tis of a famous victory I mean to let you hear
When Donnelly fought Cooper on the Curragh of Kildare.‘Twas on the 3rd of June me boys the challenge was sent o’er.
From Brittania to Ireland, to try her sons once more,
To look for satisfaction, and their honour to recall
For they were in some distraction, since Donnelly conquered Hall. The challenge it was taken, and these heroes did prepare
To battle for the title on the Curragh of Kildare
The English men, bet three to one, that day against brave Dan
But these heavy odds did not dismay our gallant Irish band; Those heroes they were loudly cheered when they stepped in the ring
They both being full determined, each other’s blood to spill.
First Cooper punched and parried, till our hero knocked him down
Well done, my boy, the Irish smiled, to win ten thousand pounds. The second round, was Cooper’s turn to knock down Donnelly.
And Dan likewise, to win the prize he rose quite furiously,
With right and left, then Cooper put Donnelly down again
The English men, they gave three cheers saying ‘Ye’r battle’s all in vain.Long life to brave Miss Kelly boys, ‘tis told upon the plain.
She boldly stepped into the ring, saying ‘Dan what do you ‘mane’.
All Irishman on your depend and all your friends’, said she,
‘My whole estate, this day I’ve bet on you brave Donnelly. Then Donnelly rose up again, and strove with all his might
In answer to this noble call, like a tiger in the fight.
Cooper gave his best defence, but ‘twas to no avail
For he soon received a mighty blow which knocked him o’er the rail.So the sons of proud Brittannia their boast must now recall
Since their champion by Ban Donnelly has met his sad downfall
In eleven rounds, with nine knockdowns, he broke Cooper’s jaw-bone.
‘Shake hands’ said she, ‘brave Donnelly the battle’s all your own’.
